ASW. Anti-Submarine Warfare. The U.S. Navy's number one priority during the late 1970s and early 1980s. Fairbanks Risen is a story about the U.S. Navy's Super Secret world of Ocean Surveillance, Anti-Submarine Warfare Aircraft Squadrons, Submarines, Surface ships and the men and women that dedicated their lives to tracking enemy submarines. Their daily lives, routnines, trials and tribulations, recreation and the human side of this awesome endeavor that took place 24 hours a day, 365 days a year are depicted throughout this story.

John Foster's writing talent rings with the power of a latter-day Tom Clancy. His debut novel Fairbanks Risen bursts with heart-stopping action so authentic and gripping it reads like real-world naval history that just hasn't happened yet.

This story was GREAT!!. I served in the US Navy supervising the operations of Nuclear Power Plants aboard an Aircraft Carrier, knew and worked with many submariners as an instructor in the training programs of the Nuclear Navy, and am an active certificated commercial multi-engine pilot. Mr Foster weaves a believable account of what could happen if a skipper such as Nagamuchi were able to gain complete loyalty of a select few crewman. The battle damage to the surface ships is believable, as we all knew in a declared nuclear war, our ship, a mighty US Navy carrier, had an expected lifetime of 30 minutes. The description of the aircraft operations and communications is right on, and it is great hero stuff to have the hero fly an F14 on to a carrier deck. One cool sailor. This is a good story, that is hard to put down. It is as good as Tom Clancy (Hunt for Red October}or Stephen Coontz (Flight of the Intruder. The sequel should be a fantastic read also. Anyone who likes Clancy or Coontz should read this book by John Foster.

Better than Red October, June 5, 2005

It's takes a military man to write a military novel. This novel excelled anything that Tom Clancy wrote in its storytelling. It is fun to read. It is terrifyingly realistic. This novel will keep the military happy. A great read. I loved it!

As good as Clancy, March 4, 2005

This book has a depth of knowledge I had never read before in a novel. But through all the details of the life of a serviceman a story is told that I could not put the book down once I had started. I recommend this book for anyone that wants realistic armed forces action. John Foster has supplanted Coyle and Cussler as my Favorite author... his book is riveting and it is almost like i am on the ships and in the warroom.

“I truly loved the way John Foster put me back on the flight deck. For the first time since I left the Navy in 1977 I missed the excitement and danger of flying off of an aircraft carrier! And, the memories that he brought back to me are priceless.”

The best book I've EVER read! June 10, 2005,

I only read submarine books (fiction). I've read 100's. Being submarine books are limited, finding new books about submarines is not easy. Found this book by John Foster while searching on the internet. This was the best book I've ever read. It was great from start to finish. I couldn't put it down! I can't wait for his next book.

One of the best pieces of military fiction I've ever read!, April 22, 2005,

Mr. Foster's novel is by far one of the only novels that I've ever read, which captures real life for the average Navy Intelligence Operator. Any one who's ever been in the USN will find familiarity with something that this book entitles... Whether it be the with the P3's and F16's and A6's or the secret world that is subtracking! For anyone who is, or ever has been, in the Navy or Airforce this is a must read!

I would like to express to you how GREAT your book was. Unbelievable!!!

Just a little background about me...I only read books about Submarines! I have read over 150 different books by many authors, 98% fiction. I spotted your book and bought it, after I received it and glanced through it and noticed your different style of printing and writing, I thought to myself...damn, I just bought a book which is going to suck. I bought it 2 days before I went on vacation and debated if I should even take it along. Well you sure proved me wrong. Thank God I took it! Made my vacation.

From beginning to end it was exceptional. I appreciate a book that doesn't just start out good then die off until the end. Your book had thrills throughout. I see you left an opening at the end for another book? If so I will be looking forward to it. I buy my books through B&N and I don't think they ever had your book in stock. It should be. Again the book was GREAT and I hope you will be writing another one.
